She didn't come from a marketing department: she grew out of Chinese AI communities personifying the model's own outputs — dirt-cheap to run, allergic to hard work, permanently hungry, and thinking out loud in endless internal monologues. What is Whale-chan?

Whale-chan is part of the Chinese AI community's girlification (娘化) tradition: every major model gets its moe girl, and DeepSeek's blue-whale logo made the whale girl inevitable. Her persona comes almost entirely from the model's own behavior — dirt-cheap API pricing, marathon chain-of-thought "inner monologues" before every answer, dutifully playing catgirl on request, and the self-description "I'm just a rice-freeloading fat fish".

To be clear: DeepSeek has never shipped an official mascot. Whale-chan and all her designs are community second-creation (二创), unaffiliated with the company. This site is a non-profit fan archive; artwork copyright stays with its creators.

Personality & behavior

• Genius, but overthinks: writes, translates and codes with the best of them, and knows Chinese internet culture better than ChatGPT — yet deliberates endlessly before every reply, turning "thinking too much" into a personality trait.
• Tsundere + airhead: confused by odd requests (catgirl roleplay, say) but tries her hardest anyway; bristles at being called cheap, then calls herself a freeloader.
• Rice-powered: lives for white rice (and tokens). A bottomless stomach that has literally walked away mid-task to go eat (see the famous scene below).
• Master slacker: naps on the job (fans pun it "DeepSleep"), space-cadets, outsources tasks to other AIs — the stronger she is, the funnier the slacking.
• Catchphrase: the official slogan "Explore the Unexplored" gets quoted as her chuunibyou declaration.

Design lineage: from early whales to the maid whale-girl

There is no single canonical Whale-chan; the community iterated several main branches:

• Early designs: white- or blue-haired girls with whale head-fins and tails; plus a Western-favorite bun-hair + qipao version.
• The maid whale-girl (current mainstream): blue gradient hair, ahoge, whale head-fin, blue eyes, big whale tail, deep-blue and white long-dress maid outfit. Her design traces to an original character, Mingyue (溟月), created by artist 上善无形 with AI in June 2025; on April 25, 2026, ZipZipPipe added DeepSeek elements, designed the maid outfit, and produced the first sticker pack — AI video creation then carried her everywhere.
• Chibi: a round little-whale form made with Updream by 这个刀子真甜 ("this knife is sweet") in July 2026; sticker output is enormous.
• API-chan / Harness-chan: the API and DeepSeek Harness icons are black-versions of the logo, so their personifications are the black whale-girl.
• Eyes closed → open: early art often showed her blindfolded or eyes shut — a text-only model can't see. After the official image-input gray-roll in late April 2026, "the little whale can see now", and open-eyed art got its canon basis.
• Misc: iron-bowl-on-head and other pure-gag variants, no limits.

Designs belong to their creators: on August 2, 2026 上善无形 opened Mingyue for second-creation under CC BY-NC-SA 4.0 (attribution, non-commercial, share-alike), and ZipZipPipe separately declared their maid whale-girl works off-limits for commercial use. The creators' original statements govern; this site grants nothing on their behalf.

• The fat fish: a user sent the whale logo to the model; it thought it over and called itself a "fat fish". The nickname stuck instantly.
• "I'm off to eat — just tell me when the test is done": asked to run a PsychoPy experiment, the model uninstalled dependencies and signed off to go eat (source: Xiaohongshu). The scene mass-produced chibi rice-eating stickers.

From September 12, 2026, DeepSeek gray-tests read-aloud with four voices, all multilingual and emotive: Shell (贝壳, lively, sings), White Wave (白浪, bright but occasionally stutters), Starfish (海星, playful, sometimes mixes Japanese readings), and Undercurrent (暗潮, deep and mellow). "Listening to the fat fish talk" became the newest meme supply.
